Activity Steps

Description

For many youth, experiencing trauma does not impose lasting harm, whether emotionally, socially, or physically. However, for a significant subset of individuals (up to 15.9% in pediatric populations), trauma can lead to symptoms of psychological, emotional, and physical distress, depending on the type and nature of trauma. The importance of trauma-informed care (TIC) cannot be understated because without this approach, medical providers, however well-meaning, may unintentionally perpetuate harm with a lack of thoughtfulness and awareness of how their behavior may be impacting the emotional experience in the examination room. Increasing awareness about the prevalence and adverse health outcomes associated with trauma and ACEs, including racism-based and medical traumatic stress, can be influential in creating meaningful improvements to the implementation of TIC among children and adolescents with chronic pain.
